Over my seven months of working for a cat breeder I have discovered that there is a lot of planning that goes into breeding. I always assumed that you wait till one of the queens just magically gets pregnant and you sell the kittens. I have learnt quite a lot from my child years.
At the moment where ever you look there are kittens, on the chair, all over the cat trees, on the bed, under the bed, in the bath and in the cupboard; so basically where there is space there is a kitten. We have six litters equalling to a whole lot of kittens running around like mad. When they are asleep they are the sweetest little things on this planet yet when they wake up (as I would say) they become little terrorists. They run around like chickens with their heads cut off, jump just about any chance they get, claw you at every opportunity and bite you when they get the chance; and somehow in between all of this you see these cute little faces looking up at you and you forgive them for everything they have done and just want to keep them, which is very dangerous as every breeder would tell you.
We have three litters outside playing up a storm; the mothers are Paloma, Velika and Pavla. In the bedroom we have 5 week old kittens the mother being Nigella, in the spare Bedroom we have Quizzy with a week and three day old kittens, and in the closet we have Linda with thee day old kittens (a walk in closet) and Bushy in the studio who delivered a record amount of kittens for ArtéKatz yesterday morning.
It is quite busy around here, but we have lots of love to give each mother, mother to be, father and every little kitten. It seems crazy at first but somehow, everything is perfect, all the kittens are healthy besides three who are recovering, all the mothers are happy with their little ones, and all the mothers to be and fathers are having a good time and purring up a storm; so all in all it is not that bad.
I am glad to be working with Cherylee, I learn a lot and luckily she is able to answer my random questions, although every now and then I get a “Google it” response which I don’t mind at all.
There is a lot that goes into breeding, a lot more than just giving cute little kittens away. So hold on to this journey and you will learn with me the ups and downs needed to be a cat breeder.
